Planning a Vegas Wedding – Essential Seasonal Tips

Essential Seasonal Vegas Tips for Planning a Vegas Wedding

In my many years as a Las Vegas wedding planner I have come to learn some important information about weddings, conventions seasons and weather. Here are some important Vegas wedding tips and essential information you need to know about when planning a Vegas wedding.

Access Temperature Data: Click here to view a website that shows the average weather temperatures in Vegas and more.

What is the seasonal weather like in Vegas?

To understand what the weather in Vegas is like for weddings read more in this article which covers spring through winter seasonal pros and cons and helps you understand how to navigate the seasons in Vegas for your wedding planning.

planning a spring wedding in Vegas

What Spring Weather in Vegas Brings

Planning a spring wedding in Las Vegas is a mixed bag of pros and cons. Spring brings a host of beautiful flowering buds and intermittent weather patterns. Sometimes you get great spring weather and sometimes it’s not so great. The average temperatures in Vegas in the springtime range from 56 degrees as a low to 78 degrees as a high although it can shoot up to the lows 90’s on occasion. Temperatures can be unpredictable. March and April are still good months to get married in Las Vegas however you do want to consider the weather and have a back up plan in the event of inclement weather. May to early June is actually a very good time to have your wedding in Las Vegas during the late morning or afternoon but May does get in to the high 90’s for temperature and the sun starts gaining real strength. It’s advisable to look at the sun index while planning outdoor May wedding ceremonies. Keep in mind the elderly and young are prone to be sun sensitive.

Windy Weather in the Springtime

Although March can be very windy, it is still very temperate this time of year. Las Vegas sits in a valley. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides and resembles a city in a bowl. This causes a weather phenomenon of increased spring winds as the hot air begins its descent into the Las Vegas valley and stirs up trouble. Of course the wind is not predictable far enough in advance to plan a trip. The winds can happen up until April and part of May. However, we have had beautiful 80 degree days with no wind in March and April. The chance for high winds usually calms down in May through June. The weather is typically very beautiful in May and early June so this would also be an excellent time to plan your outside wedding in Las Vegas. Just keep the wind in mind and make back up plans for it if you have an outside ceremony or reception.

Summer Weather – Pros and Cons

planning a summer wedding in Vegas

People traveling here to Vegas don’t realize how HOT the summer can be. It’s SCORCHING HOT!

I have a lot to say about summer weddings in Las Vegas. I have noticed that a lot of people tend to plan to have a Las Vegas wedding ceremony in the summer. Summer weddings are sometimes unavoidable because they are popular as this is a common time off for vacation typically. I have planned and conducted many summer weddings in Las Vegas.

If you are planning a Vegas wedding in the summer there are some things you need to be aware of. On the plus side it’s very nice on summer evenings typically unless it’s humid. The atmosphere of Vegas is alive and hopping. On the negative side there are chances for a bad sunburn, heat stroke and a lot of sweating. My advice is to be prepared and know what you are in for. It’s best not to have an outside wedding in the highest heat of the day. Many times I have felt very sorry for grooms in their suits and brides with running makeup. Quite a few couples I have planned weddings for have decided to have their ceremony in the hottest part of the day without shade. Those who have pulled it off were prepared mentally and physically for the heat. They made it through but preparation and understanding the consequences were essential to a happy outcome.

For Fashion and Preparation tips the information in this article will help you be more prepared for your trip to Vegas.

Summer Monsoon Season: July through August is monsoon season in Vegas. It typically gets hot as blazes and builds up billowing clouds of moisture from the South. This moisture gathers quite a punch! We get rains that make our roads into rivers and often cause wind damage. Be prepared for monsoon weather in case you are having a Las Vegas outdoor wedding planned. It’s good to have an indoor backup plan as an alternative in case the sky gets black and the monsoon visits. When we plan a Las Vegas wedding during the summer we have backup solutions to offer for inclement weather.

summer monsoon weather and weddings in vegas

Summer Heat Tip: I would recommend you wait until the sun goes down behind our mountains and not have your wedding ceremony outside at the height of the day. The sun index is way too hot for sitting in a wedding audience in the heat of the afternoon from 11am to 5pm. It is best to avoid having an outside wedding in the summer unless you have shade or a vehicle or building you may access to regulate your body temperature. Drinking plenty of water keeps you hydrated and avoids heat stroke. It gets dark around 8 pm. Summer peaks in Vegas July through the end of August.

Summer Room Rates: Usually you will find cheaper room rates during summer time in Las Vegas. You can usually get a cheaper rate Sunday to Thursday than from Friday to Sunday. You can find great hotel deals in late July and August because it is hot. A lot of hotels realize they have to reduce prices and lure people in that way. A lot of people prefer to come in early spring and fall to get optimal weather but if you can handle the heat, there are good deals to be found.

Summer Planning Tip: For planning weddings in Las Vegas during the summer months the best idea is to choose a climate controlled location for your wedding in Las Vegas.

There are no really large conventions during the summer months in Las Vegas so it is typically a good time to get cheap hotel rates. Keep in mind it still is tourism season and people travel to Vegas on vacations in the summer, even though it is hot. That means the streets will be packed with tourists, all trying to get a great deal. Conventions and sporting events do however happen year round so it’s always best to ask the hotel if there are any conventions in town while you research making your reservations.

Excellent Hotel Choices: You might want to also read this article about 6 hotels that are great to get married in Las Vegas to find out what hotels might be a great option for a summer or outdoor wedding with access to shade as an option. Another great tip is to tell the hotel booking agent at the hotel you are considering you planning to get married in Las Vegas. They might just upgrade your room reservations complimentary as an incentive for your patronage.

Autumn in Vegas is Gorgeous and Popular:

Planning an autumn wedding in vegas

Planning a Vegas wedding in the Autumn is a lot less daunting and more feasible. First of all, the weather is gorgeous. The average temperatures range from 58 degrees for the average low and 81 degrees for the average high temperatures. This makes it a very popular time to travel to Vegas and have a wedding. Usually Autumn is a peak season for travel and hotel fees as well. During the Autumn in Las Vegas it is advisable to plan ahead for your wardrobe. Since temperature varies, layering is a great idea. Bring a sweater or use a wrap to put over your shoulders during the wedding.

Winter Las Vegas Weddings

Planning a wedding in Vegas during the winter months also has its pros and cons. Let’s face it, just after the Thanksgiving Holiday in late November, most people are focusing on family and getting ready for Christmas, holidays and winter. For this reason most people choose not to come to Las Vegas in December. This is good news for you if you are considering getting married in Vegas then. Holidays and winter is typically off season in Vegas with New Year’s Eve being an exception to this rule. But for the most part the winter months are an inexpensive time to have a wedding in Vegas. During the Christmas season, with the exception of New Year’s Eve holiday, hotel room rates are cheaper as well.

planning a winter wedding in Las Vegas

Winter Weather Pros and Cons

National Rodeo: Also, you need to know this; during the month of December there is one convention that wreaks havoc in Las Vegas and that is the National Finals Rodeo. This is a 10 day event and is considered the Super Bowl of rodeos that happens the first couple weeks in December. During this time you would be very lucky to book any rooms at the best or even cheapest hotels. Prices spick for transportation and traffic is a nightmare.

Consumer Electronic Show: Another convention time you will want to avoid is the Consumer Electronic show which typically takes place the second week of January. So unless you are attending the show and are planning a Vegas wedding in conjunction with attending one of the conventions you might want to avoid coming to Vegas this week. Your room rates will be higher in Vegas then because the convention people take a huge block of rooms in most hotels. The traffic is also a nightmare here then. So if you are planning to get married in Las Vegas I would recommend doing it either after or before the convention to save yourself hassle and make it more enjoyable.

Visit the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor Authorities site for a reliable resource to check what conventions are in Las Vegas before making plans to have your wedding in Las Vegas. You might want to make sure you are not scheduling your wedding during a convention for many reasons.

Holiday Season: December through February is one of the slowest and other optional off season but it’s not great pool weather. It’s simply too cool for most people to enjoy the pool. If you enjoy Las Vegas shows, also be aware that some shows take an extended break and go dark and some casinos think it’s a great time to undertake their renovations. Check with your intended hotel before you some and ask if they are planning any renovations.

Super bowl weekend is also a very busy one here in Las Vegas. It usually takes place the first weekend of February.

NASCAR race weekends: You would do well to avoid traveling to Las Vegas during the NASCAR racing events. Once again, the traffic tends to be tied up and it can be very crowded than. I have married quite a few couples that were huge fans of NASCAR and came to Vegas to get married because there was a big race in town. The races take place a couple times during the year. These type of sporting events can wreak havoc on hotel room rates, so beware of that.

Here is the complete and ongoing schedule for Nascar racing in Las Vegas.

New Year’s Eve:

Planning for New Years Eve in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is incredibly busy on New Year’s Eve. The entire Strip is shut down to traffic and it becomes like one giant block party for you and 300,000. This makes traffic an especially crazy mess. Fortunately there are a lot of ride share and alternative traffic solutions to get around but the roads are still crowded. It makes it especially challenging to have a Las Vegas wedding ceremony on New Year’s Eve. In my opinion the best solution is to choose a hotel away from the main part of Las Vegas boulevard.

Las Vegas Boulevard from Sahara Avenue to Mandalay Bay Road is totally blocked off to traffic by barricades and closed down from 6 pm to 3 am. Also many side roads that intersect with South and North Las Vegas Boulevard as well as some freeway entrances and exit points close to traffic. This makes having a wedding ceremony on the Vegas Strip especially challenging to do for many. Be prepared to have all your affairs in order and stay put for many hours in one spot. If you do plan a wedding on NEw Year’s Eve and want mobile Las Vegas wedding vendors to serve you be prepared to hear a lot of no’s or to pay more for their services. The other alternative is to book a hotel away from the mayhem in sections of the city not impacted by the traffic and celebration as much.

Learn more about the traffic closures on New Year’s Eve here.

What Seasons Do You Get the Best Room Rates in Las Vegas?

The answer to that question is off season.

Timing: Come to town when it’s off season and you will find better hotel room rates and a good supply of rooms available. It is cheaper to stay during the week opposed to the weekend.

Travel and weather resource: View this website to better understand the best time to travel to Vegas for weather, this site has essential information and graphs

The take away from this article is to make sure you know what you are up against regarding the weather seasons in Las Vegas as well at the dynamics which will affect the cost of planning your wedding in Las Vegas as well as the decision on where to have your Las Vegas Wedding.

Timing it wisely will be the best idea. Now you are armed with more information to choose.

Nelson Ghost Town Elopement – Fun Adventure in Nelson Nevada

A Nelson Ghost Town elopement is trending:

Having a Nelson Ghost Town elopement is an easy and stress free. That is why it is becoming an increasingly desired spot for Vegas destination wedding couples looking for a unique, fun and picturesque backdrop for their nuptials. It is also considered one of the most romantic places to elope in Vegas. Nelson is on a private property located about an hour away from Las Vegas and is a historical landmark becoming increasingly popular with wedding couples. Nelson is located in the mountains of Eldorado Canyon, Nevada. It has a rich history making it very popular tourist attraction.

In this blog post I will share some of the photos we took from an Eldorado Canyon ghost town wedding I planned for one of my clients, Henk and Iris this summer.

Nelson is still used to this day as a Hollywood studio and backdrop for music videos. In fact 3000 Miles To Graceland was filmed there. This funny and entertaining YouTube video gives a walk through of Nelson Ghost Town also known as Eldorado Canyon Mine.

Check out this YouTube video showing the plane blowing in 3000 Miles to Graceland. It’s a clip from the movie and the plane crash at Nelson is what is left from the explosion.

I am my vendor team of professionals at Custom Las Vegas Weddings
had a blast seeing their love and admiring the fun they had there during their Nelson ghost town elopement. What a joy it was to be around them. They were such fun loving people and had quite a laugh. They especially love the romantic vintage atmosphere at Nelson Ghost Town. As you see from the photos, they are so in love and had the time of their life posing and exploring the props and site.

Nelson Ghost town in Eldorado Canyon has an old mine on the property which has daily guided tours. It showcases vintage relics such as old cars and buildings, old buildings, rusty antique trucks and more including a great collection of vintage signs. This makes a great backdrop for Nelson Ghost Town wedding photo tours, creating fun and romantic memories of a lifetime.

Romance – good times – memories to be made at Nelson Landing Ghost Town

Nelson Ghost Town showcases quite a variety of old used vehicles and equipment, even mining equipment that was actually used back in the day when the Techatticup gold mine was operational. There are a host of props to use for the backdrop of a wedding as you can see from the photos below.

Having a Nelson Ghost Town elopement was the best choice for Henk and Iris. Iris is a photo officinato in the Netherlands and loved taking photos herself, even during her own wedding. She loved the vintage theme and it was her love of the idea that prompted them to have a Nelsons Landing wedding. They had such an incredible time exploring and posing for photos with the old props, crashed airplane, air-stream trailer and they even decided to get in the old rusty tubs.

A perfect ending to a beautiful day. Congratulations you two!

Some people say it only takes only 20 minutes to get to Nelson Ghost Town. I will caution you here on that and add, it really depends on where you start from and what the traffic is like on the day. It has always taken me 1 hour to travel there because the road used to get there is under construction and Las Vegas traffic has become more congested recently.

Here is a map below showing directions to Nelson’s Landing where the Ghost Town is. You will want to leave extra time to get there if you are traveling in your own vehicle.

map and directions to Nelson Ghost Town

To get to the Nelson’s Landing take US-95 South toward Boulder City. You will want to keep alert because the Searchlight exit comes up quickly on the right just before you reach Boulder City. It’s a very small sign and easy to miss but if you do miss it you have to go to Boulder City and do a U-Turn. As you travel toward Searchlight there is a large dry lake bed (on your right) at about the ten mile marker. When you pass the dry lake bed, you will a large solar panel field and that is your marker to look to the left. On the left is a very small sign (Exit 165) that says Nelson on your left. Take that exit and drive another 10-12 miles and it will take you right into the town of Nelson, Nevada where the ghost town is.

We hope to have the opportunity to meet you and be a part of your special day.

The Pros and Cons to Elope in Las Vegas – Infographic 101

Do you want to elope in Las Vegas?

You might be thinking you want to elope in Las Vegas, just so you don’t have to deal with the stress of wedding planning. However, you don’t just want to elope to Las Vegas without thinking through the pros and cons of everything first.

Elope in Las Vegas

Many couples are faced with the decision to either have a big wedding or decide on a smaller wedding and eloping in Vegas provides many great possibilities. The info-graphic next to this article, created by the Wedding Band Shop, outlines the pros and cons you need to consider when deciding if you want to elope or not. Eloping is not a decision I advise you to rush into. Think about all the pros and cons when making the decision. This article will take you through the pros and cons to help you decide.

What is your motivation to decide on a Las Vegas elopement?

vegas elopement

What do you envision for your wedding? Do you dream of walking down the wedding aisle with all eyes on you? If so, you will want to either reconsider your decision or put aside those emotions.

planning a vegas elopement
How well does your family work together and with you on decisions? If your family doesn’t work well together or if they often clash with your ideas and decisions, eloping offers a great choice to avoid conflict in your wedding experience.

Do you really want to elope or are the frustrations of planning pushing you into the decision? If you have given up on the idea of a larger wedding just because of the frustrations you are experiencing, you may want to step back and re-think it. Frustrated feelings are most often natural emotional reactions to stress whether you elope or not. You will be out of your comfort zone when planning. You just need to decide how far out of your comfort zone you want to go.

What does your partner want? The final choice should belong to both you and your partner. What do they want? Ask them and then consider some of the pros and cons and in the end, doing so will help you arrive at a mutual decision.

Have you considered all the options? Eloping is not the only choice of course. It suits a lot of couples but you will need to decide what aspects of your wedding are most important to you in the end and act accordingly.

Is there a chance you will regret your decision? If you think there is a chance you will look back and regret your decision, you will want to really take the time and think it through with your partner.

eloping in Vegas

Pros –

  1. It’s less expensive – You avoid many of the costs associated with larger weddings when you decide to elope in Las Vegas. The cost of eloping in Vegas pales in comparison when you factor in the guest count, restaurant fees, and decoration costs, not to mention the formal cost of planning a formal affair. For example, many venues including ours offer all-inclusive elopement packages in Vegas.
  2. You call the shots – Elopement puts you and your partner back in control. You can rest assured you are making decisions you want to make without any unwanted family coercion and intrusions on your wishes.
  3. The world is yours – the sky is the limit when it comes to choices here in Las Vegas. There are places to get married in Vegas outside that provide great opportunities for an impromptu event. For those wanting something more private, there are great elopements venues in Las Vegas to consider that don’t break the bank but still offer the classy elopement option.
  4. Only VIP’s are present – Whether you decide it will just be the two of you or if you want to bring along a select number of family or friends, you are only having those you really want there at your wedding.
  5. Privacy – When you have a large formal wedding event you spend a majority of your time around other people, pleasing them and entertaining them. With an audience of 200 guests, it’s difficult to enjoy the private moments with your new partner.

Cons-

  1. Hurt Feelings – No matter where you decide to elope, one problem some people might face when thinking about eloping is the potential hurt feelings. Not all the family will agree with your decision to get married Las Vegas and the reality is you may have to deal with some fallout. Hopefully, most of your friends and family will be supportive and in the majority of cases, people love the weather and entertainment, not to mention the gambling opportunism most people love about Las Vegas.
  2. Fewer Gifts – If you are in need of receiving necessary gifts for the household in your newlywed life or if you want to receive personal remembrance gifts that mean a lot of you, the variety and amount will not be as plentiful if you elope.
  3. Less Extravagance – Smaller weddings are often less glamorous affairs than the larger formal events. That is not always the case but they certainly will not carry the formal flair and glamour a larger wedding affords.
  4. Dependence of vendors – You may choose a number of vendors or no vendors at your smaller Vegas elopement. This can be a pro or con depending on your opinion. Often times if you want a simple elopement in Vegas you will want a photographer to capture your affair for posterity. But you may choose to only have a ceremony and use your friends and family to take photos or video. If you choose a Vegas elopement for two, it will be essential to choose a photographer to be your witness. Choose a vendor that will allow you to use your own photos and not make you dependent on them entirely.
  5. Fewer guests to witness – With fewer guests attending, there will be fewer people to reminisce with you about your wedding day later. Of course, if you get a video or photo and have a get together later with a slideshow of the event that will help. That is what many couples who elope decide to do but it still is not the same as being there to share it with you.
